Theatre Royal — Restoration

Few projects carry the weight of history that comes with the Theatre Royal Sydney — one of Australia’s most significant performance venues, originally designed by renowned architect Harry Seidler, and a cultural landmark deserving of the care its restoration demanded. Forge was tasked with bringing it back to its former glory.

Project details

The refurbishment transformed the 1200 seat theatre into a contemporary cultural destination without compromising the architectural heritage that makes it irreplaceable. Interior works encompassed extensive upgrades to public foyers, seating, amenities and back-of-house facilities — delivering a refined, world-class experience for both audiences and performers, and reinstating the Theatre Royal as a premium venue on the national stage.

Balancing modern theatre functionality with the obligations of heritage restoration required close collaboration across a highly specialised project team, and careful navigation of statutory and heritage approvals throughout. Forge managed the project from concept to completion — design team procurement, approvals, stakeholder consultation, contractor procurement and management, and coordination through construction, commissioning and occupation certification.

The result is a venue that honours its past and performs with confidence in the present — restored, revitalised and ready for the next chapter.
