Lyttelton Port — Earthquake Remediation

- Lyttelton Port of Christchurch
Lyttelton Port of Christchurch is the South Island of New Zealand’s primary port and a critical gateway for international trade — central to Canterbury’s regional economy and the continuous movement of goods, services and marine operations. When the Canterbury earthquakes struck, restoring that functionality was not simply a commercial priority; it was an economic imperative.

Project details
This involved developing a strategic response and managed assessment for repair works across a broad range of critical port assets — buildings, electrical reticulation, waste and stormwater systems, coal processing facilities and wharves. The complexity of the work was matched by the complexity of the environment: close negotiation and coordination with multiple stakeholders and insurers was required throughout to reach agreed outcomes across each workstream.
Given the port’s essential role in the national economy, emergency works were undertaken to restore key services within days of each major seismic event. All long-term remediation was then carried out within a fully operational port — requiring meticulous planning to ensure continuity of service was maintained alongside works of considerable technical complexity.
