Manapouri Power Station — Refurbishment

Buried deep within the surrounding mountain landscape, the Manapouri Hydro Station is one of New Zealand’s largest power stations — generating 1,000MW from an underground facility that is, in itself, a remarkable feat of engineering.

Project details

This project involved a full refurbishment of all eight generating units, with the dual objectives of extending the station’s operational life and improving efficiency by approximately 3%. Delivering that scope within a live, continuously operating power station, in a highly constrained underground environment, required a level of planning and coordination that left no room for error. At no point during the works could the station’s output be compromised.

The result is a facility better equipped to serve New Zealand’s energy needs for decades to come.
