Model Moxham — Heritage Refurbishment

Built in 1902 and listed as a building of Local Heritage Significance in the City of Sydney, the Model Moxham building is a four-level brick Edwardian department store with a history as prominent as its architecture. Forming part of the Broadway Shopping Centre, the building was an integral part of the Grace Bros retail empire — occupied by the famous store chain from 1904 until 1992 — and its refurbishment demanded a response equal to that legacy.

Project details

Forge were engaged to project manage the design, Council and heritage approvals, and construction of a major refurbishment, incorporating the fitout of Rebel Sport’s flagship House of Sport Sydney store across the lower three levels with 2,900sqm of retail space. The brief called for a strong retail outcome that simultaneously showcased the heritage features of the asset — a balance that required careful navigation of heritage requirements alongside the functional demands of a modern flagship retail environment.

Works included façade refurbishment, reinstatement of the heritage lifts, upgrade of the heritage stair, decommissioning of escalators, upgrade of services, modifications and upgrades to back-of-house areas, and the full Rebel Sport fitout. The result is a building that honours its past while performing with confidence in the present.
