Constructed in 1881 and historically one of Australia’s largest bond stores, the Grafton Bond Building is a significant presence in Sydney’s heritage landscape. Later adapted as part of the Maritime Trade Centre in the late 1980s, with the original warehouse structure retained beneath surrounding commercial towers — the building carries a history that informed every decision made during its refurbishment.

Project details
Forge managed a complex external remediation programme that encompassed slate roof replacement, brickwork repairs, waterproofing upgrades and the restoration of original timber windows and façade elements. Preserving the heritage fabric of a building of this age and significance required careful planning and a considered approach to sequencing throughout — works were staged to avoid disruption to tenants, with any internal activities undertaken outside normal operating hours.
The result is a building whose historic character has been protected and restored, returned to a standard befitting its place in Sydney’s architectural history while continuing to function as an active commercial asset.
