Opened in 1972 and ranked among the top five concert halls in the world for its acoustics, the Christchurch Town Hall is a building of international significance. A landmark civic and cultural venue that has served the city as a destination for concerts, conventions, ceremonies and corporate events for more than five decades. This project marked its first major refurbishment since original construction.

Project details
The objectives were carefully considered: restoring functional and aesthetic standards, addressing deferred maintenance, enhancing services and amenities, and modernising key spaces — all while protecting the heritage fabric that makes the building irreplaceable. The introduction of a new restaurant and café added a contemporary dimension to the venue’s offering without compromising its character.
Delivering works of this nature within a building of such significance, under strict heritage constraints, while maintaining the venue at near full operational capacity in a busy inner-city environment, demanded exceptional coordination and a deep respect for the building itself at every stage.
The scope of works covered the full process — securing local government funding, procuring and managing the design team, obtaining statutory and heritage approvals, coordinating planning and heritage consultants, stakeholder engagement, and managing the main contractor through construction and commissioning. A project that required as much care as it did capability.
