The Christchurch Bus Exchange, located in the heart of the Christchurch CBD, served as the chief bus interchange and comprised as an intersection for 36 main bus routes for the Metro network.

Since the Bus exchange first opened in 2000, the number of people using the bus service and interchange had doubled and existing facilities were stretched past their initial design.

Scope for the project included providing six additional external bus stops and a new waiting lounge with live bus tracking technology, located within a heritage building. Significant negotiations and agreement with inner city business owners was conducted to remove existing car parks and allow for additional passengers on footpaths.
